I've tried gel stains for this but I've always found them too sticky to spread out evenly, especially over a large surface, like a table top. In glazing, you want to wipe on a thin layer of stain, spread it out to an even color and leave it to dry. Next seal the piece with shellac then after a light sand, glaze it with a thick body stain. A dye would probably work just as well here, maybe better, but I've never tried it myself. I've had good success first using a lighter color stain but one that's in the same color family as your desired color to establish a base color. ![]() This Highboy I built last year is entirely Poplar. I've built several pieces around my house from Poplar.
